Charge up

Charge-up and time-and-materials work

Charge-up work looks low risk because the client pays for the hours. It isn't — margin leaks through unrecorded hours, materials bought and forgotten, and claims that arrive too late to argue about.

Record as you go, not at the end

Every hour, material purchase, subcontractor invoice and additional cost goes in as its own entry with a date. The running total is always current, so a progress claim is a report you print rather than a night spent reconstructing the job from memory and a glovebox full of dockets.

Rates and margins frozen to the job

When a charge-up job starts, its labour charge rates and material and subcontractor margins are locked to it. Change your defaults later and the job in progress — and every completed job — stays exactly as agreed.

A progress claim the client can read

MARGIN produces a client-facing progress claim PDF showing the work, hours and charges. It contains no internal cost figures, no margin percentages and no profit — only what the client is being charged.

Still measured on margin

Internally, charge-up jobs are costed the same honest way as fixed-price work: labour at loaded internal cost, so your gross profit margin on charge-up work is real and comparable.
