FAQ

Common questions

Straight answers, including the things MARGIN deliberately doesn't do.

Is MARGIN construction management software?

No. There is no scheduling, site diary, client portal or document control. MARGIN is the pricing and profitability layer. Plenty of businesses run it alongside a project management tool.

Does it replace my accounting software?

No. Keep your accounting software for invoicing, GST and payroll. MARGIN uses summary figures from your profit & loss to work out what your business must recover per hour.

Is it estimating software?

Not in the takeoff sense — MARGIN doesn't measure plans or price material schedules. It checks the margin a quote will produce, and compares it against what the job actually cost.

How is labour costed?

Always at your loaded internal cost per hour, never at the charge-out rate. The charge-out equivalent is shown separately so you can see the labour contribution. How rates are built up.

If I change my wages, do old jobs change?

No. Completed and in-progress jobs are locked to the rates that applied when the work was done, so your history stays accurate.

What happens to a profit & loss or estimate I upload?

The figures are read from it and shown for you to check and confirm. The file itself is not kept. See the Privacy Policy.

Will MARGIN tell me what to charge?

No, and that's on purpose. It shows costed rates, ranges and the assumptions behind them. MARGIN informs. The business owner decides.

Is it built for New Zealand?

Yes. It's built for NZ trade businesses, in NZ dollars, using NZ language and practices — charge-up work, P&G, variations and back costing.
